About Me

My photo
A long time ago, I was a child. (I started out as Cathy First from Colon, Mi.) For the past several years I’ve been an adult. A lot of things went on between those two stages of life; probably no more or no less than anyone elses. My husband and I moved to “da U .P” from southern Lower Michigan several years ago (yes we were trolls at one time). We owned and operated and operate Clementz’s Northcountry Campground and Cabins just north of Newberry, Michigan until May 2015. We have grown kids and grandkids (who all live downstate). My passion is life and all that Nature has to offer us and trying to photograph it in unique ways. Our intention in life is to see all that Nature has to offer us. We hope that you will be a part of our adventures as we cruise through our lives together. Come back often!

WOW!!! Do THESE photos bring back memories!! I took these several years ago, I'm thinking about 1994 or 1995. This is what our campground looked like 2 or 3 years after we purchased it. You may already know from previous "Yarns" that the State Health Department had closed the previous owner's down in 1989...it was BAD when we purchased it. We had a lot to do to even get our license.

These old photos were scanned for me by a friend so they aren't the highest quality...and they were taken before digital cameras were invented (or at least before digital cameras were available to us mere mortals).

The layout of the park hasn't changed but there are a lot more trees and the trees you see here have GROWN. We built the pavilion around 1995 and enclosed the pavilion about 1996 (top photo, lower left hand side). There are a LOT of things/upgrades we did that if you had seen the park THEN and saw it NOW you'd be able to tell the difference.

The 2nd photo shows where one of our nature trails goes off to the southwest but it doesn't show all of our woods and acreage.

Looking at these photos brings back a LOT of memories. We sure had our work cut out for us when we arrived here! I don't think either one of us would be up for that kind of a challenge ever again in our lives!! Maybe one of these days, we'll take another flight over and get some AFTER shots! Close to 20 years AFTER!

If I may ask, what did or didn't the owners do that cause the state to shut them down ????

  2. Anonymous, the biggest problem that the previous owners had was non compliance with State regulations....which meant when we purchased it, we had to go fix all the issues that had not been installed properly to begin with. It was not simple things to fix; they were LARGE items to fix (like the lift station to begin with). We had to hire an engineer to "re-draw" the septic system plans and things like that.

That's a nice layout of a campground. I don't think I've seen one laid out like that before. I hope you get some more shots from above! It'd be neat to compare t hem!

  4. Love those shots from the heavens...you definitely need to get some new ones and frame them and hang them up to admire...besides I think they would really help sell your campground if that is still your goal. :0} Hope your knee is feeling better! I think of you lots!

  5. Anonymous, lots of campers comment on the layout and how big the sites are.

Retired One...the problem is being able to get away to take the plane ride...and doing it when the campground is pretty near full. Hard to get away then! Catch 22!! Knee is better, thanks for asking, but I just am very run down and tired for some reason. Too pooped to pop!

  6. Hey Cathy, What a great overview of your grounds. I had no idea it was this large! I bet with all the new trees and the grown trees, plus all your hard work it's stunning! Maybe you can get find a local pilot to snap a few pics the next time he's off for a joy ride. A comparison shot would really be something.

Glad you're knee is on the mend.
