Trenton man killed in UP snowmobile crash
Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News
Police suspect alcohol and speeding contributed to snowmobile crash in the Upper Peninsula that killed a Trenton man Friday.
Michael Gregory Makuch. 46. ate lunch and drank beers with friends Friday afternoon before crashing his 2004 Arctic Cat 600 Snowmobile on a sweeping curve in Newberry and hitting a large tree, said Michigan State Trooper David Moeggenborg of the Newberry Post.
Makuch suffered severe injuries to his head, neck and chest in the crash on the groomed trail, state police said.
Preliminary reports indicate Makuch had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit,
Moeggenborg said, citing a conversation with Helen Newberry Joy Hospital officials.
Moeggenborg had not yet subpoenaed blood tests for his report on Saturday afternoon.
Makuch was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Relatives on Saturday declined to comment about the incident or Makuch.
