I can’t help but have good feelings about this upcoming winter! While some of the Weather Wizards are predicting gloom and doom (meaning LACK of snow and cold), two others are saying that Michigan is going to have a GOOD winter. They also say that when it gets cold and snows, the snow will stay instead of having warm ups and loosing the snow. Remember last year how our area had good snow even before the trails officially opened??? Then it warmed up and we didn’t even have snow for Christmas! THAT is the 2nd time in the 15 years we’ve lived here that has happened. I’ve been told by “old timers” that 1952 previously was the last time there hadn’t been snow for Christmas.
While we are talking about snow and opening dates of the trails, I do need to remind you as I do EVERY year that many trail systems cross private property and the trails are gated off for a reason. For this discussion, I’m going to be talking about the TASA trail system (Newberry area). Snowmobilers know that the Michigan trails officially open December 1st. HOWEVER, SOME OF THE TRAILS THAT CROSS PRIVATE PROPERTY DO NOT OPEN TILL MUZZLE LOADING SEASON IS OVER! The gates will NOT be opened until then. This year, in our area that season runs from December 7th to December 16th, meaning the gates will be open (assuming there is snow) on December 17th. This normally just affects the north trail system OUT of Newberry. You CAN ride anything beyond the 3 Mile staging area and North after December 1st but from the staging area by the RR tracks in Newberry TO the 3 Mile staging area, THAT IS TOTALLY OFF LIMITS! DO NOT GO AROUND GATES! Not only is it possible you could be arrested for trespassing but you COULD get shot! Who wants to be in the line of fire of a serious deer hunter???
Clubs are very fortunate to have private land owners give us permission to cross their property for use of snowmobiling so don’t screw it up! They have every right to deny access at any time for any reason and we could loose a LOT of the trail system if that were to happen. IT already has happened over in the Marquette area.
OK! Let’s talk about the photo contest! I’m getting kind of worried that there hasn’t been much interest yet! Maybe it would help for you to know that these photos do NOT have to be taken THIS season; they CAN be photos from PAST seasons! And keep in mind, if this is successful, there will be another contest next year and the “theme” of that contest will be the best photo of a TASA groomer on the trail. So this winter, you COULD start getting THOSE photos for next year! If ya have any questions, please email me at email@example.com!
THANK GOODNESS THE TIME HAS CHANGED!!! YEAH!!!!
